African American Venus Williams won the Olympic women's tennis singles gold medal here today with a convincing win over Russian Elena Dementieva.
The world No.3 took just 58 minutes to power past 10th-seeded Dementieva 6-2 6-4 on Centre Court at Olympic Park.
Olympic gold capped an awesome three months for Williams, who has also triumphed at Wimbledon and the US Open while compiling a 32-match winning streak.
Dementieva, a US Open semi-finalist herself two weeks ago, beat Williams in their only previous meeting, at last year's Fed Cup, but was no match for the second seed today.
She had to fend off break points in nearly all her service games and only managed to break Williams late in each set when the American was in total control.
Williams, 20, has the opportunity to add a second gold tomorrow when she teams with younger sister Serena to contest the women's doubles final against Dutch pair Miriam Oremans and Kristie Boogert.
