About Michael Als

Sept 14, 2000
By Raffique Shah

Most of his early-life details were carried in an interview in the Sunday Express (I believe).

He was a teacher/Young Power leader in 1970. Detained, but not for long. Went totally Moscow-Marxist post 1970 (as distinct from the Che/Fanon revolutionary line adopted by Rex and me). He was close with Cheddi Jagan, Trevor Munroe (Jam), Coards, James Millette, etc.

In the 1983 Grenada crisis, he was one of two foreigners allowed to enter the island after Coard pulled his coup. The other was Munroe (a private jet was sent for him). Both rabid Marxists (Bishop, incidentally, although he toed the Moscow line, was more given to flexibility), Munroe was said to have advised Coard (maybe to kill Bishop?), while Als, after the mass murders, went on Radio Free Grenada and broadcast that "all is quiet in Grenada". Boy, talk about cuss I put on him (and people like Millette, who had supported Coard) afterwards.

Als is an oppostunist parading as a patriot. He resigned from BGWU not because he was fed up of town life, but because of serious health problems (kidneys, I believe). His PPM, which was Marxist, contested the 1986 election and lost all deposits. He then disbanded his party and joined with Club88/UNC--hence the presence of Wade Mark and Vincent Cabrera in the government. He himself has done UNC work in Toco under the guise of the foundation. I suspect they got help from government to access $1m-plus for the Foundation, and he must have siphoned some of that for his personal use.

Without prejudice, I believe it will be good if the UNC nominates him for Toco/Manzanilla (he orchestrated the meeting that nominated him). He will lose so badly, I hope his kidneys are dealt a severe blow! He is one of a band of ex-Marxists who used to brand me "reactionary". Now we see who was really revolutionary and who was fooling around. Personally, I still treat him like a piece of dog shit whenever I cross paths with him.

Hope this gives you a better insight into the mouse (well, he's not a man, is he?).
