Not satisfied with verbal abuse, upon stopping the taxi they proceeded to torture the two people who had been headed downtown to take care of personal errands on the public road. René Novoa comments: "They violently forced us out of the taxi, and attacked us without justification. They beat me on the side with the butts of their rifles. When I wanted to see how my friend was doing, a soldier suddenly dealt me a well-aimed blow in my gut that left me on the ground momentarily unable to breathe."

I have seen the personal toll this dictatorship is taking on Hondurans, on families, on friends, and it's not an academic issue. People's lives, everything they've worked for, a lifetime (and even generations) of friendships, their homes, savings, belongings, their families, destroyed. And I'm just talking about the wealthy members of the resistance here.
