A little known story in the midst of the broader political crisis concerned the illegal ouster of Honduras' director of the Institute of Anthropology and History, the state agency charged with protecting, restoring, researching and promoting the country's cultural heritage, including its ancient archaeological past. This aspect of Hondurasīs national identity is often associated with the tourism drawn to the country's world famous ancient Mayan city in Copan, near the Honduras-Guatemala border.

The month following the installment of President Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo has been one of increased repression against anti-coup activists in Honduras. The Jan. 27 inauguration was an attempt to legitimize the U.S.-backed military coup d'etat that ousted Manuel Zelaya.

Recent news, such as the Gacetazo scandal over a lucrative dam contract in Nacaome, highlights the perennial problem of government corruption in Honduras. In the "scorecard" for FY 2010 released by the Millenium Challenge Corporation in October of 2009, "control of corruption" was one of the few indicators where Honduras failed to meet the standard required. According to that source, Honduras scored in the 44th percentile among its peer group of countries, a decline from its previous position close to the median for the peer group.
