Honduran press coverage of the national march called by the Frente de Resistencia for April 15 was, not surprisingly, muted. Pro-coup La Tribuna, for example, framed their story (credited to AFP) around the "success" of the campesinos of the Bajo Aguan in obtaining land grants earlier in the week.

An article today cites U.S. ambassador Hugo Llorens as stating concern about impunity. Finally, you might exclaim, our pressure has brought the State Department around to recognize the violence perpetuated by the architects of the military coup d'etat, the SOA-trained military leaders, and others responsible for the over 4,000 documented human rights abuses carried out since June 28th of last year! Nope.

The "March of the Cowboy Hats" that took place on April 15th is a powerful symbolic show of a new kind of cross-class solidarity in Honduras. The sombrero, now inseparable in national and international political imagery with Mel Zelaya, is first and foremost a symbol of the campo, and by extension, the campesino.
