- Honduras Un-Invited to Spain?

In a story published on its website half an hour ago, La Confidencial of Spain reports that Miguel Ángel Moratinos, Spanish Minister of External Affairs "has had to rescind" the invitation previously issued to Porfirio Lobo Sosa to attend the Cumbre América Latina y el Caribe-Unión Europea (EU-Latin American and Caribbean Summit).

Articles in the Honduran pro-coup La Tribuna and the Spanish Europa Press today report that Porfirio Lobo Sosa has invited José Manuel Zelaya Rosales to return to Honduras, supposedly without fear of being arrested on outstanding warrants. The offer by Lobo Sosa was spurred by President Alvaro Colom of Guatemala.

As an official "Truth Commission" was inaugurated May 4th in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, leading Honduran human rights groups expressed serious concerns and announced an alternative commission. Saying that a real truth commission "should provide a space which has been denied to the victims, in which they can be heard and injury to their rights repaired," the groups criticized the official commission for "exclusion of the victims" and the "lack of processes to ensure effectiveness and impartiality."

South American leaders have threatened to pull out of a scheduled EU-Latin American summit in Spain if Honduras President Porfirio Lobo attends. Some leaders of the 12-nation South American Unasur bloc urged Spain to revoke Mr Lobo's invitation. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva were among the leaders backing the move.
