THE DRAMATIC failure of the military coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is an embarrassment for the Bush administration.
Indeed, the administration's role in condoning the overthrow of a democratically elected leader is nothing less than shameful. Did the administration abandon the defense of democracy, one of the most sacred pillars of U.S. foreign policy, just so it could get rid of a pesky, petroleum- rich opponent and install a more docile servant of Big Oil?
