April 11 coupsters wanted to take Venezuela out of (OPEC) Posted: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 President Chavez Frias claims that April 11 coupsters wanted to take Venezuela out of the Organization of Oil Producing Countries (OPEC). Speaking to Qatar’s El Jazeera 24-hours news outlet, President Hugo Chavez Frias has accused “other countries” (?) of involvement in the failed coup d'etat. Taking Venezuela out of OPEC, he says, would have lowered oil prices (just as the United States has been pressuring!) and broken the OPEC "fair prices" agreement to keep a barrel of oil between $22-28.
