War and Terror: Assassins R Us Tuesday, November 18 @ 03:11:33 UTC | by Chalmers Johnson, TomDispatch.com
As the Iraqi resistance expands and perfects its attacks, the American military,
like so many occupying armies before it, is turning to methods of warfare long
outlawed by civilized nations -- assassinations and reprisals against civilians.
When it comes to the first, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has long been
on record as wanting Saddam Hussein and the leaders of al-Qaeda and the Taliban
brought in "dead or alive," with emphasis on the former. Now, according to a November
7th front-page piece in the New York Times, the Pentagon, in conjunction with
the CIA, has announced the creation of a new "task force" -- polite language for
an assassination squad -- to accomplish these ends. "The new Special Operations
organization," according to reporters Thom Shanker and Eric Schmitt, "is designed
to act with greater speed on intelligence tips about 'high-value targets' and
not be contained within the borders where American conventional forces are operating
in Iraq and Afghanistan." In other words, this death squad, composed of U.S. Army
Special Forces troops, can run down its quarry in countries like Yemen, Saudi
Arabia, or Pakistan but presumably also (if the occasion required it) in France,
Germany, or even the United States itself.

War and Terror: This war on terrorism is bogus Saturday, September 06 @ 12:21:10 UTC | The 9/11 attacks gave the US an ideal pretext to use force to secure its global domination
By Michael Meacher, The Guardian
Massive attention has now been given - and rightly so - to the reasons why Britain went to war against Iraq. But far too little attention has focused on why the US went to war, and that throws light on British motives too. The conventional explanation is that after the Twin Towers were hit, retaliation against al-Qaida bases in Afghanistan was a natural first step in launching a global war against terrorism. Then, because Saddam Hussein was alleged by the US and UK governments to retain weapons of mass destruction, the war could be extended to Iraq as well. However this theory does not fit all the facts. The truth may be a great deal murkier.
We now know that a blueprint for the creation of a global Pax Americana was drawn up for Dick Cheney (now vice-president), Donald Rumsfeld (defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz (Rumsfeld's deputy), Jeb Bush (George Bush's younger brother) and Lewis Libby (Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled Rebuilding America's Defences, was written in September 2000 by the neoconservative think tank, Project for the New American Century (PNAC).

War and Terror: Ex-spies slam US over failure to find WMD Saturday, April 19 @ 14:14:12 UTC | From Agence France-Presse
The US government should be "embarrassed" over the apparent failure to uncover weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the main justification for going to war, retired intelligence officials said Thursday.
"It's going to be very embarrassing when it turns out they have nothing to declare," said former defense intelligence analyst Eugene Betit.
Another, former CIA station chief Ray Close, said: "I'm hoping they will be embarrassed into acknowledging a role for some independent body. And who could it be but the UN?"
As the "smoking gun" continued to elude US sleuths in Iraq, chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix called for experts to return to the country to determine whether the weapons allegations had any foundation.

Inside U.S.A.: Sniper Case - True Lies? Monday, December 02 @ 18:45:43 UTC | By Jim Rarey
As court records and other documents have become available, a troubling pattern of government willful inaction, suppression of relevant facts, and misleading statements to the media has emerged.
The handling of circumstances around the Bushmaster rifle, alleged to be the sniper weapon, by the ATF and FBI are incomprehensible and inexcusable. Initially there was confusion over a similar Bushmaster rifle Muhammad had purchased from Welcher's Gun Shop in Tacoma, Washington in December of 1999. The rifle was sold back to the gun shop by Muhammad on May 23, 2000; two months after his ex-wife had obtained a restraining order against him. It was his apparent possession of the weapon after the date of the restraining order that was the basis of the arrest warrant issued in Seattle less than 24 hours before his arrest.

Inside U.S.A.: The DC Shootings Tuesday, October 22 @ 10:08:39 UTC | By Terry Joseph
That the Washington DC shooter is now asking for a ransom, makes it a case of kidnapping, with the population of the entire district held hostage.
Interestingly, only the police have their hands tied (from lack of
corroborated evidence) and mouths gagged, the latter, they say, because the investigation is at a sensitive stage.
Tens of thousands of children are being kept at home, away from school and play. Fox News reports working adults who have vacation entitlements have been applying for leave. Entertainment has generally been shut down and service industries generally could soon go out of business, as no one wants to be found walking outside a diner, 7-11, shopping mall or gas station.
