World Focus: GLOBAL RELEVANCE OF THE SOCIAL PHILOSOPHY OF MAHATMA K. GANDHI Wednesday, January 19 @ 11:02:08 UTC | By Franz J. T. Lee
The historic life and heroic struggle of Mahatma K. Gandhi (Oct 2, 1869 to Jan 30, 1948) against British colonial injustice, human degradation, economic exploitation and social discrimination are well known, here we will just spotlight certain selected aspects of his social philosophy, its moral principles and its contemporary relevance for global revolutionary and emancipatory efforts.
Not by any means are we ignoring the worldwide invaluable works and moral contributions of the global, erudite, academic titans on the topic Gandhi, that definitely concern his social principles and ascetic modus vivendi, however, here, we will just quote K. Santhanam, who is also an expert in this matter, and who best describes our own philosophic deliberations:

Caribbean: Trinidad Raises First Offshore Gas Rig Monday, November 22 @ 16:09:28 UTC | By Tyehimba, triniview.com
Those in the oil and gas industry globally are keeping a close watch on the building of the Cannonball platform undertaken by BPTT in the LABIDCO Estate, in south Trinidad. A short distance away from the site is the La Brea Pitch Lake, the only one of its kind, where more than 400 years ago British pirate/explorer Sir Walter Raleigh used tar from the lake to fix the leaks in his ship. While there is a tendency amongst foreigners to view Trinidad and other Caribbean countries as little backward "banana islands", the almost completed construction of the Cannonball drilling platform is challenging skeptics in the oil industry who said that it could not be built in T&T.

War and Terror: ''I saw the heads of my two little girls come off'' Wednesday, April 02 @ 19:42:10 UTC | The Sydney Morning Herald
An Iraqi mother in a van fired on by US soldiers says she saw her two young daughters decapitated in the incident that also killed her son and eight other members of her family.
The children's father, who was also in the van, said US soldiers fired on them as they fled towards a checkpoint because they thought a leaflet dropped by US helicopters told them to "be safe", and they believed that meant getting out of their village to Karbala.

Inside U.S.A.: Bush's Ugly America Tuesday, February 11 @ 18:44:51 UTC | by John Stanton, January 23, 2003
"The spirit was freedom and justice
And its keepers seem generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
Heed the threat and awesome power of the mighty Pentagon
Which is wasting precious millions on the toys of Washington
Just one time I'd like to be somewhere where
None of your clever lies fill the air
I'm tired of your frozen smile and your voice of tin"

War and Terror: HBO Adds Disclaimer to Gulf War Movie Friday, January 03 @ 18:57:32 UTC | www.fair.org
Responding to a FAIR activism campaign, HBO recently added a message to
the end of its movie "Live From Baghdad," clarifying the scenes that
seemingly endorsed the fraudulent stories about Iraqi soldiers removing
Kuwaiti babies from incubators. The film, a fictionalized account of
CNN's coverage of the Persian Gulf War, leaves viewers with the impression that these events actually happened.

Racism Watch: Media Play Catch-up on Lott's Latest Endorsement of Racism Wednesday, December 11 @ 18:45:37 UTC | Coverage mostly omits senator's history of support for segregation Dec. 11, 2002, www.fair.org
Six days after Trent Lott's latest endorsement of racism, media have taken notice. But the story of Lott's long-term involvement with racist and neo-confederate causes is still largely untold.
At a 100th birthday party for retiring Sen. Strom Thurmond on December 5, the incoming senate majority leader had this to say about Thurmond's racist 1948 presidential campaign on the Dixiecrat ticket: "I want to say this about my state. When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of him. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."

Inside U.S.A.: Clinton and Black Americans: Soul Brother? Monday, December 09 @ 12:59:08 UTC | by Kevin Alexander Gray, Dec. 7, 2002
"... he [Clinton] has always wanted our love and wanted to share his love with us," "It is not about the skin. It is about the spirit and the soul of this soul brother."
Former Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater
I was mildly amused, a bit disgusted but not surprised when former President Bill Clinton was named to the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of gullibility when it comes to the relationship between blacks and the man from Hope. Towards the end of his term, he was viewed favorably by a staggering 83 percent of African Americans. Now Clinton has been named honorary chairman of the planned $37 million national Museum of African American History expected to open in Charleston in 2007.

Inside U.S.A.: Is the President Nuts? Diagnosing Dubya Tuesday, October 22 @ 13:21:06 UTC | by CAROL WOLMAN, M.D.
Many people, inside and especially outside this country, believe that the American president is nuts, and is taking the world on a suicidal path. As a board-certified psychiatrist, I feel it's my duty to share my understanding of his psychopathology. He's a complicated man, under tremendous pressure from both his family/junta, and from the world at large. So the following is offered with humility and questioning, in the form of a differential diagnosis.
From the Freudian point of view:
Dubya may be acting out a classical Oedipal drama--overcome Daddy to get Mommy. By deposing Saddam, when his father did not, he may want to prove himself more worthy of his mother's love. His rationale that he is avenging the assassination attempt on George, Sr., may be a reaction formation- his way of hiding the true motive from himself.

World Focus: Lobsters, Caviar and Brandy at Summit on Starvation Sunday, September 22 @ 20:43:04 UTC |
By Neil Syson, www.thesun.co.uk
THE sickening champagne and caviar lifestyle being enjoyed by Earth Summit delegates was exposed yesterday.
They are gorging on mountains of lobster, oysters and fillet steak at the Johannesburg conference - aimed at ending FAMINE.
As the summit began yesterday, desperate kids in nearby shanty towns queued for water at standpipes.
Bigwig politicians among the 60,000 delegates, including Deputy PM John Prescott, also get vintage bubbly and brandy.
